W. Michigan’s Iacopelli, Molino and Michigan Tech’s Roy all sign pro contracts

After some incredible seasons, both Michigan Tech and Western Michigan were one-and-done in the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament. Tech lost 5-2 to No. 1 overall seed Denver, while the Broncos were ousted by Air Force, a team they went 1-0-1 against earlier in the season.

Following the end of end of their respective campaigns, a trio of players — two Broncos and one Husky — announced they were signing professional contracts.

All three players — Matheson Iacopelli, Griffen Molino and Matt Roy — are native Michiganders.

Both Iacopelli (Brownstown, MI) and Molino (Trenton, MI) are departing after two seasons at Western Michigan and being the team’s two leading scorers this year. Iacopelli potted 20 goals and totaled 36 points this year to lead the Broncos, after scoring just one goal and racking up seven points as a freshman.

Molino meanwhile didn’t have as much of a spike in production as Iacopelli but a noticeable uptick across the board from his freshman season, ultimately finishing with 15 goals and 33 points.

The two have played together since 2014-15, going back to their days with the Muskegon Lumberjacks of the USHL. Iacopelli is signing with the Chicago Blackhawks, who drafted him in the third round back in 2014. Molino inked his deal with the Vancouver Canucks as an undrafted free agent.

As for Matt Roy (Canton, MI), the 22-year-old leaves Michigan Tech after three seasons in a Huskies uniform. This past season, the defenseman scored five goals and helped in 21, upping his point total from 20 a year ago. He also doubled his penalty minutes from a season ago in five more games played.

Roy is signing a two-year entry-level deal with the Los Angeles Kings, who drafted him in the seventh round in the 2015 Draft.
