2 New candidates emerge for Detroit Lions head coach opening

The Detroit Lions will have plenty of big decisions to make during the coming offseason but the biggest decision of all may be who they should hire to be their next head coach.

Plenty of candidates have been mentioned, including San Francisco 49ers DC Robert Saleh, Kansas City Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy, and even Urban Meyer (HARD PASS).

But according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, a couple of new candidates have emerged for the Lions to consider. Those candidates are Tampa Bay Buccaneers DC Todd Bowles and New Orleans Saints assistant HC Dan Campbell.

Here is what Birkett had to say about Bowles and Campbell.

Bowles has not generated much head coaching buzz, but he should be of interest to any team that wants experience. He had one winning record in four seasons with the New York Jets, and his defense is a big reason why Tampa is headed to the playoffs for the first time since 2007. The Bucs, of course, held the Lions without an offensive touchdown last week. Bowles interviewed for the Lions’ head coaching job in 2009.

Campbell is another under-the-radar name who has ties to the Lions (he played tight end in Detroit in 2006-08), previous head coaching experience (as interim coach of the Miami Dolphins in 2015, when he went 5-7) and is part of one of the NFL’s best-run organizations now (the Saints won their fourth straight NFC South title over the weekend). He came into the league as a player under Bill Parcells, and while he has never been a coordinator, does carry a Mike Vrabel-like presence that resonates as a leader of men.

Nation, would you like to see the Lions hire either Bowles or Campbell to lead the team into the future?

W.G. Brady’s Hard Pass Article reads its message like it was composed by a 13 year old. Only 2 proper examples given of being a quitter (for health reasons, no less) that are 7 years apart from each other.

    Remember Nick Saban before Alabama?

When have we ever had a “name brand coach” someone who proved themselves BEFORE they were our head coach? I mean, not even Marinelli was that guy because George SEIFERT won the 94 superbowl with the 49ers. Our best coach recently was Wayne Fontes. If you want to say our most recent winningest coach, you gotta go all the way back to the 90s. Where we actually took multiple playoff trips in a decade and actually won one.

Sorry for this rant, but NO MORE UP AND COMERS, forget that OC, DC, DL, STC, QBC… NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!!!! Just get the guy that has proven he has won before. Yall making this more difficult than it has to be.
