Detroit Red Wings forward Andreas Athanasiou has recently been in the doghouse of head coach Jeff Blashill.
He played just over five minutes (and not at all in the 3rd period) of Detroit’s December 23 victory over Ottawa. He was a healthy scratch for Detroit’s loss against Anaheim on January 4th, and was called out by Blashill, saying he needs a higher compete level.
Athanasiou responded in a big way in last night’s 4-0 victory over the Kings. He registered a career high three points (1G, 2A), four shots, and was all over the ice. The Red Wings were in dire need of points, and he made sure it would happen.
Playing with new linemates Frans Nielsen and Thomas Vanek, they dominated the first period and helped Detroit jump ahead to a 3-0 lead. Athanasiou assisted on both of Vanek’s first period tallies, and also struck on a breakaway for his 6th goal of the year. Safe to say, that line will likely remain intact for the immediate future.
If the Red Wings are going to extend their playoff streak to a 26th straight year, they need players like Athanasiou to consistently be at their best. If last night’s game is any indication, the man they call “Double A” will certainly be doing his part.
