As we know now, Brad Holmes‘ biggest move since taking over as general manager of the Detroit Lions was trading quarterback Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams for Jared Goff and a trio of draft picks.
But when Holmes first took his job with the Lions, Stafford was his quarterback and he had already started to develop a plan to build around him.
From Detroit Free Press:
“I totally had every intention on that he was going to be the quarterback,” Holmes said. “When I started breaking tape down, I was like, ‘Wow, this dude, he’s a talent,’ which you already knew. But then you get refreshed when you start breaking him down, like, ‘Wow.’ But, no, not till when we were all made aware that he wanted a trade, ‘All right, let’s do the best thing for the club.’”
Stafford, of course, had other ideas as he reportedly told the Lions that he did not want to be part of a rebuild at this point of his career and that he wanted to be traded.
Congrats on Brad Holmes was getting rid of all the over priced big name talent of which Matt Stafford was the biggest. Such a one sided trade along with conservative 1 year FA signings and an amazing first year draft. Holmes is set next 2 years with those 2 additional Rams #1 picks, congrats.
