Detroit Red Wings trade F Jacob de la Rose

After Wednesday’s 5-1 loss at the hands of the New York Rangers, the Detroit Red Wings announced that they have traded forward Jacob de la Rose to the St. Louis Blues. In exchange for de la Rose, the Red Wings receive NHL veteran center Robby Fabbri.

Fabbri was selected with the 21st overall pick of the 2014 draft by the Blues. In his 164 game NHL career, he has scored 32 goals to go with 41 assists. All of his NHL action has been with St. Louis. This season, he has scored one goal in nine games. In 2015-16, his rookie season, he scored 18 goals and 19 assists, both of which are still career-high marks. He has also played in 30 NHL playoff games, during which he has tallied five goals and 11 assists.

Fabbri has one year remaining on his contract, and carries a cap hit of $900,000 for the season. At the end of this season, he will be a restricted free agent. It seems likely that Fabbri will slot in to Detroit’s lineup in an initial role similar to that of de la Rose’s, but has the potential to provide a bit more offensive spark.

de la Rose, whom the Red Wings picked up off waivers from the Montreal Canadiens in October of 2018, played in 76 games for Detroit. He scored four goals and nine assists while sporting the Winged Wheel. In 16 games this season, he had tallied a goal and three assists.

Late last season, de la Rose experienced a cardiac-related issue during a game, during which an elevated heart rate was detected. It was the second time in his NHL career that a cardiac-related issue had cost him time from the lineup.

Perhaps not coincidentally, de la Rose was a late scratch from Detroit’s lineup on Wednesday, and did not play with the team during their loss at Madison Square Garden.
