Just about nothing went right for the Michigan State Spartans on Saturday as they were embarrassed on their home field by a Rutgers team that had not won a Big Ten game in nearly three years.

Give the Scarlet Knights credit for taking advantage of plenty of mistakes by the Spartans, including a whopping seven turnovers (2 interceptions, 5 fumbles), but had Michigan State not shot themselves repeatedly in the foot, the outcome almost certainly would have been different.
Following the game, Mel Tucker spoke to the media following his first game as head coach at Michigan State and he said something that reminded us of something former Spartans each coach Mark Dantonio would say.
“This is the beginning, not the end,” Tucker said. “This is a process.”

Tucker added that he was proud of his team and how they kept fighting until the end.
“Our guys continued to play for 60 mins, to fight and to score. That’s a good sign. There was energy and want-to.” Felt a “football character about this team that I appreciate.”
