Though it cannot be made official until the new league season begins on March 17, the Detroit Lions have traded Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams for Jared Goff and a pair of future first-round draft picks (2022,2023) and a third-round pick in 2021.
By adding Stafford to the mix, many are saying the Rams are the favorite in the NFC to go to the next Super Bowl.
But according to NFL Insider Peter King, just getting to the Super Bowl will not be enough to justify the Rams trading what they did to acquire Stafford.
Now, McVay was not the coach when Goff was drafted, but the McVay/Goff team led the Rams to the Super Bowl in the 2018 season, and McVay was in favor of the rich contract Goff got days before the 2019 season. That contract ended up biting the Rams, and McVay, as the coach lost faith in the QB this season, leading to the deal for Stafford. McVay is thrilled with the outcome and thinks Stafford has the deep arm he covets to give the Rams a complete offense. We’ll see. But the bar will be high for Stafford and for McVay. The franchise made a Super Bowl with Goff. With a better defense than in 2018, the franchise needs to win a Super Bowl to justify the Stafford deal.
These are some pretty strong words from King as it is hard enough to get to a Super Bowl, let alone win it. But that being said, you can bet Sean McVay will have one ultimate goal in mind when the 2021 season kicks off and that is to win it all.
