Red Wings Celebrate Epic Comeback with OT Win and Griddy Dance

On Wednesday, the Detroit Red Wings achieved something they hadn’t done in 38 years: they came back from a four-goal deficit to win. Jake Walman did a Griddy dance to celebrate their 5-4 overtime victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins at PPG Paints Arena.

Walman Scores Game-Winning Goal in Overtime. Does the Griddy Dance

Walman scored the game-winning goal at 2:13 of overtime off a rebound that he tipped past Casey DeSmith. After scoring, Walman celebrated with his teammates in a dance known as the Griddy in the corner.

“It was an accumulation of good work,” Walman said. “After that second and third, I think we deserved at least that point.
“It was a great game and I think the boys showed a lot of resilience. We knew it wasn’t good enough after the first period and we dialed it in after that.”

Red Wings Overcome Rare Four-Goal Deficit

The Red Wings trailed 4-0 after the first period but managed to chip away at the deficit and eventually come out on top. It was only the third time in franchise history and the first time since 1984 that they could overcome a four-goal deficit and win.

Red Wings Show Resilience

The Red Wings, who had been off for six days due to their Dec. 23 game postponement at Ottawa, have won two games in a row for the first time since Dec. 4-6. They showed resilience in their comeback, with goals from Dylan Larkin, Joe Veleno, Jonatan Berggren, and David Perron (on the power play) in the second and third periods.

“It was an accumulation of good work,” said Walman. “After that second and third, I think we deserved at least that point. It was a great game, and I think the boys showed a lot of resilience. We knew it wasn’t good enough after the first period and dialed it in.”

Red Wings Erase Four-Goal Deficits for Third Time in Franchise History

The Red Wings have erased four-goal deficits to win on three occasions in franchise history. In addition to Wednesday’s win, they also accomplished this feat against Toronto in 1972 and against Boston in 1960. The Vancouver Canucks are the only other team to achieve this feat this season, with a 7-6 overtime victory against Montreal on Dec. 5.
