“We made the decision after talking with Casey to shut him down for the season,” Littlefield said. “Basically, we are pleased with the year that he’s had, and it’s his first full season. With many pitchers in their first full seasons, we keep an eye on the overall package with how things are going, and we felt with the way things have gone this season, the time was right to do this.”

“Casey will stay with Erie for the rest of the season and report to the instructional league on Sept. 13,” Littlefield said. “We have some work for him to do in the instructional league and some things for him to work on and improve at that point in time.”

In 21 games in the Tigers minor league system this season, Mize is a combined 8-3 with a 2.55 ERA while striking out 76 batters in 78.2 innings of work.

Mize, who is 22, was selected No. 1 overall by the Tigers in the 2018 MLB Draft. He is the No. 2 ranked prospect in all of baseball according to MLB Pipeline.
