The Detroit Lions will have a ton of important decisions to make during the offseason but none is more important than deciding on who they will hire to replace Bob Quinn as general manager.
One candidate for the job, according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, is former Houston Texans GM, Rick Smith.
Birkett is reporting that the Lions will interview Smith for the GM position, likely next week.
Smith is expected to interview with the Lions before Christmas, likely next week, a person familiar with the Lions’ plans told the Free Press on Monday. Smith is eligible to be hired immediately as he is not currently employed by a team.

Smith was GM of the Texans from 2006-2017. Before that, he was the Director of Player Personnel with the Denver Broncos from 2000-2005.
Dan Pompei of The Athletic notes that Smith should be considered by any team with a GM opening as he offers “more than a typical GM in terms of creating a culture.”
The Falcons and Lions have interest in Rick Smith (per @RapSheet and @davebirkett), as well as at least one other team. Any team with an opening has to consider Smith, who can offer more than a typical GM in terms of creating a culture. https://t.co/6yX6BTeMpF
