Richard Sherman rips Detroit Lions culture, says he turned down $20 million guaranteed

This coming Sunday, CB Richard Sherman will be playing in the Super Bowl as a member of the San Francisco 49ers.

Prior to the 2018 season, Sherman signed an “incentive-laden, three-year, $39 million deal” with the 49ers.

But according to Sherman, via a report from Michael Lombardi of The Athletic, he actually turned down a bigger offer from the Detroit Lions ($40 million guaranteed) because of their scheme and culture.

From The Athletic:

Sherman said that the Lions offered him a contract that included $10 million guaranteed in each of its first two seasons. According to Sherman, that offer featured more guaranteed money than the incentive-laden, three-year, $39 million deal he ended up signing with the 49ers.

“But that’s not the kind of football I want to play,” Sherman said of the Lions, who are coached by former New England defensive coordinator Matt Patricia. “The way you run their scheme, your culture. You want to do it the Patriots’ way and that’s really not the way I do football.

“I have fun. I like music at practice. I like to hang out and be relaxed in meetings. I don’t like the stressful environment in football. (The Lions) condition every day after practice. My body isn’t built to run all day and night. I’ll be prepared, but I don’t have to be run into the ground.”

Nation, do you think there will be free agents, like Sherman was at the time, who refuse to sign with the Lions because of the way Matt Patricia runs the team? Or, is this just Richard Sherman being a diva?
