TBT: Lions earn first Thanksgiving victory since 2003 against Packers

It was 10 years in the making and it just so happened to be against the same team.

detroit-lions-logoThe Detroit Lions played their annual Thanksgiving Day game in 2013 against their NFC North rivals, the Green Bay Packers at Ford Field. The Lions were riding a nine-year losing streak on ‘Turkey Day’. Football on Thanksgiving has been a staple since it first got introduced in the Motor City back in 1934. After a heartbreaking 34-31 overtime loss to the Houston Texans the year prior, the Lions were looking to flip the script and get back to providing a victory on Thanksgiving for the city of Detroit.

The game against the Packers was 17-10 in favor of the Lions going into halftime. Head coach at the time, Jim Schwartz must have really said something to spark the team in the locker room because Detroit scored 23 unanswered points, ultimately leading to their 40-10 victory over Green Bay.

The Lions’ defense was ferocious all day long as they held the Packers’ offense at-bay. Green Bay quarterback Matt Flynn was held to only 10/20 passing with 139 yards and an interception, while also being sacked a total of seven times. Eddie Lacy couldn’t run the ball to save his life as he only carried the football a total of 10 times for 16 yards.

Matthew Stafford led the Lions’ offense and really fed off the performance the defense was having that particular day. Stafford finished the game going 22/35 passing with 330 yards and three touchdowns. Reggie Bush and Joique Bell did an excellent job balancing the offense with the ground attack, but also contributed by catching some passes from Stafford as well. Bush finished with 117 rushing yards with a touchdown and 65 receiving yards, while Bell chipped in with 94 rushing yards a touchdown and 34 receiving yards. Calvin Johnson finished the day with six receptions for 101 yards and a touchdown for the Lions.

It was a great scene at Ford Field that day. The Lions hadn’t won a game on Thanksgiving for nine years and were looking to avoid making it a tenth straight year. With the performance they put on against the Packers, they made sure that wasn’t going to happen.

The FOX NFL Sunday crew weighed in post game with their take on the Lions/Packers game.
