The good feelings of the Detroit Tigers sweeping the Houston Astros earlier in the week have all but evaporated as they’ve dropped the first three of four games against the Oakland Athletics.
What’s worse, they’ve been blanked in the past two in a row.
Detroit’s offense wasn’t able to get anything going for the second straight day, dropping a 7-0 decision this afternoon and dropping their record to 6-9, good for last place in the AL Central. Oakland starter Cole Irvin threw six shoutout innings, while Detroit’s Casey Mize struggled.
Following the loss, skipper A.J. Hinch kept things concise.
“Two days in a row, we haven’t scored a run. That’s not going to lead you to many wins,” said Tigers manager A.J. Hinch. “You do have to tip your cap and pay your respect to the guy on the other side, but also satay in the fight and do what you can to make it more difficult on them. They’ve really won the batter-pitcher competition on both sides, and that’s why we’ve ended up on the short end.”
For Robbie Grossman, who once played in Oakland, this will be part of the process in determining who is cut out to play at the MLB level.
“It’s just moreso guys are learning how to play games at this level,” Grossman said of the scoreless outings. “We have a bunch of young guys. We’re going to see who really wants to be here and who wants to show up and play hard every day and be a part of this.”
The Tigers and Athletics will play the final game of their series tomorrow afternoon starting at 4:07 PM EST.
