Detroit: City of Champions podcast drops first two episodes [Video]

Did you know the Detroit Lions, Detroit Tigers, and Detroit Red Wings ALL won their first championship in the same season? If so, did you know that was also the same time period that the great Joe Louis burst onto the boxing scene? What about the fact that there were also 30 other minor sports championships from the Detroit area in addition to the Lions, Tigers, and Red Wings during that season?

If you knew ALL of those things, you have probably have read the book titled Detroit: City of Champions – The Story of the Most Important Season in Detroit Sports Historywritten by Charles C. Avison.

But whether or not you have read Avison’s book, you are in for quite the treat if you are a fan of Detroit sports history. Avison joins 96.3 WDVD radio host Jamie Flanagan on a new podcast that takes a deep dive into the 1935-36 time period in regards to Detroit sports.

Here is the press release which was recently released regarding the Detroit: City of Champions podcast.

“Over the course of seven incredible months stretching from 1935-1936 Detroiters struggling through the grim realities of the Great Depression would celebrate a succession of triumphs that remains unmatched in the annals of professional sport:

Three major sport championships, the rise of Joe Louis and 30 “minor” sport championships – all of which were celebrated at a banquet hailed as “Champions Day.”

Now, for the first time, this story is explored in a new show: Detroit City of Champions. It is hosted by radio veteran Jamie Flanagan and Detroit author, Charles Avison. Along with producer Matt Fox the show hopes to illuminate this overlooked story and create support for a major Hollywood film based on Avison’s books and finished screenplay.

“Detroit City of Champions” is broadcast live on Facebook every Thursday at 6 o’clock with each video posted on YouTube. The audio of the episodes are available on Podcast Detroit, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Sticher, and Google Podcasts.”
