Detroit Lions: Ben Johnson lists 3 ways the offense can improve

Through the first four games of the 2022 season, Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson had the offense rolling in a big way. In fact, through Week 4, the Lions had the highest-scoring offense in the entire NFL.

But in Week 5, something happened. The New England Patriots absolutely shut down the Lions’ offense as they walked away with a 29-0 win.

How does Ben Johnson think the Detroit Lions offense can improve?

Thankfully, the Lions had their bye week in Week 6, as they had quite a few players dealing with injuries. (They still do have a handful of players dealing with injuries)

During the bye week, Ben Johnson met with the offense and he gave them three points of emphasis for the remainder of the season.

Those points, according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press are as follows:

  1. Better Communication
  2. Improving Fundamentals and Technique
  3. Playing Better Football in Critical Situations

“That’s what’s shown up in the first five games, whether it’s short yardage, third downs, two-minute, four-minute, all those where we could potentially close the game out or end the game with the ball,” Johnson said. “We have to be better there. So I think the guys took that to heart, they understand the direction we need to go and really excited about how coach (Dan Campbell) is approaching this week with pads on, a little bit more intensity, cause that’s going to help us in terms of the communication part and the fundamentals and technique.”

What is next for Ben Johnson and the Detroit Lions?

Up next for the Lions’ offense is the Dallas Cowboys.

According to DVOA advanced defensive statistics, the Cowboys currently have the No. 6 defense in the NFL, which would be the second-toughest defense the Lions have faced this season. (The Philadelphia Eagles currently have the No. 5 ranked defense)

When it comes to offense, the Lions currently have the No. 9 ranked unit, according to the DVOA stats.

Nation, do you think the Lions offense, which hopefully will get back D’Andre Swift and will have a close to 100% Amon-Ra St. Brown, can get the job done against the Cowboys?
