Ford Field to host USFL games in 2023

We passed along a report the other day that a big announcement was going to be made at Ford Field on Thursday, and that announcement has been made. If you are a fan of the Detroit Lions and you are already missing going to the Motor City, the USFL has you covered. That’s right, football fans, the home of the Lions will be hosting USFL games in 2023, including games played by our own Michigan Panthers.

Why it Matters

During the 2022 USFL season, all games were played in Birmingham, Alabama, which made it very difficult for fans of the Michigan Panthers to see their team up close.

  • The USFL reboot took place in 2022
  • The Michigan Panthers had the No. 1 overall pick but finished with the second-worst record in the league
  • The USFL has announced that Ford Field will host games in 2023

2 USFL teams will host games at Ford Field

According to reports, two USFL teams will host games at Ford Field during their 2023 season. Those teams are as follows.

  • Michigan Panthers
  • Philadelphia Stars
  • The first game at Ford Field will take place on April 30

What they are saying

“When the momentum started building behind Detroit, that was something that became very, very intriguing for us,” Daryl Johnston, executive vice president for the USFL, told The News in an interview earlier this week. “Especially with the Michigan Panthers, and what that represents. We have the ability to kind of go back into the original USFL launch back in the 1980s and kind of tie in a lot of the historical elements now. We felt that was good with Michigan, plus the opportunity to be at Ford Field.

“We felt like this was too good an opportunity to pass up.”
