Former Detroit Tigers OF J.D Martinez discusses future

In 2018, former Detroit Tigers outfielder J.D. Martinez signed a 5-year, $110 million contract with the Boston Red Sox. The deal includes an opportunity for Martinez to opt-out following the 2020 season, which would allow him to hit the free-agent market.

But opting out of his current contract, which will pay him a total $38.7 million for the 2021 and 2022 seasons, does not seem like something Martinez is leaning towards doing because of the uncertainly following a shortened season.

“I would not want to be a free agent during this time for that reason. You just don’t know,” Martinez said.

So far in 2020, Martinez is batting just .218 with three home runs and 17 RBIs in 33 games.

Things can certainly change but it seems very likely that J.D. Martinez will be playing for the Red Sox in 2021.
