Jarrad Davis Departs Detroit for New York Giants

Jarrad Davis, a former first-round pick and linebacker for the Detroit Lions, has agreed to sign with the New York Giants. He could make his Giants debut Sunday against the Colts.

Why it matters

  • Davis left the Lions for the New York Jets last season but returned to Detroit after injuries hampered his time with the Jets.
  • He did not make the team out of training camp this year but was added to the practice squad and given extra money to stay with the team.
  • While on the practice squad, Davis served as a mentor to rookie Malcolm Rodriguez and made some meaningful contributions in the Week 10 game against the Chicago Bears, batting down a pass and recording two tackles.

The Big Picture

According to the team, the linebacker has agreed to sign with the New York Giants. He was signed off Detroit’s practice squad. Davis is a former first-round bust which left Detroit for the New York Jets last season but elected to return to the club after injuries derailed his long year in the Big Apple.

He didn’t make the team out of training camp but was valued enough by the coaching staff that he was given extra money to sign with the team’s practice squad. The linebacker has been a good fit this season, especially while working as a mentor for rookie Malcolm Rodriguez. Davis made meaningful contributions when elevated for the Week 10 game in Chicago. He batted down a Justin Fields pass on one of his first snaps and finished with two tackles. Davis also played against the Vikings and Jets this month, which exhausted his availability to be elevated off the practice squad. He would have to sign with the 53-man roster to be eligible to play again. He chose to go with the Giants instead when that opportunity did not come.

  • To be eligible to play again, Davis must sign with the 53-man roster. He chose to join the Giants instead when that opportunity did not arise.

Jarrad Davis by the Numbers

Davis spent five of his six NFL seasons with the Lions and played for the Jets in 2021. In his career, he has appeared in 67 regular-season games with 50 starts, recording 327 tackles, 10.5 sacks, 23 quarterback hits, seven forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, 10 passes defended, and one interception. He has also contributed six special teams tackles. This season, Davis played three games with the Lions, recorded three tackles, and defended one pass.
