With the No. 7 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions selected OT Penei Sewell out of Oregon.
Sewell opted out of his final season with the Ducks and that, coupled with the fact that he is still just 20 years old, meant it would almost certainly take some time for him to adapt to the NFL level.
That has been the case through two preseason games as Sewell has definitely looked like a rookie. That being said, he has also shown quite a bit of growth and the willingness to adjust and learn on the fly.
Had the Lions passed on Sewell in the draft, they may have selected QB Justin Fields, who was instead selected by the Chicago Bears.
According to Mike Stone of 97.1 the Ticket, Sewell “did not look real good” and though it is still very early, it looks like the Lions “screwed up” by not taking Fields.
“Penei Sewell did not look real good,” Stone said on Monday. “It’s still early in his career. I’m going to say it. I was one who said, ‘I don’t want them to draft a quarterback.’ I’m not saying, ‘Gee, you should have listened to me, no.’ Right now, it’s very very early, but it kind of looks like that they screwed up by not taking Justin Fields this very very early early on in our evaluations.”
Nation, what do you think? Should the Lions have selected Justin Fields with the No. 7 overall pick?
My answer: Absolutely not! Folks, please be patient and wait to see how this plays out.
