Longtime Michigan donor, philanthropist and fan Al Glick dies at 95

The University of Michigan extended family suffered a loss today, as longtime philanthropist and donor Al Glick died at the age of 95. He was the chairman and CEO of Alro Steel, and also has his name on the Wolverines practice facility that was made possible by a near $9 million donation in 2009.

“There are many things Al will be remembered for, most notably his unmatched love for his family and the University of Michigan,” Alro Steel officials said in announcing his death on Feb. 8. “He will be remembered for the company he has built, his passion for customer service and the belief that teamwork is the key to the ongoing success of our company.”

The campus also features the Glick Family Performance Center, as well as a $3 million renovation to Schembechler Hall that was completed in 2011 thanks to his donation. Meanwhile, Alro Steel employs over 3,000 people in 13 states.

Among his additional donations include a $3 million gift in the name of former head coach Lloyd Carr to Mott Children’s hospital, as well as a $10 million donation to Jackson Public Schools for multiple renovation projects.

And as a fan of Michigan athletics, he was a regular at both football and basketball games.

“Al was an amazing man who touched so many with his kindness, generosity and love for others,” former Michigan coach John Beilein said in a statement. “It was always comforting to look over and see him sitting beside me for every home game. I was always trying to get him to help me coach and to call the first play, however, he always gracefully declined.

“One of my fondest memories was grabbing him and hugging him after our last-second win over MSU. He was so shocked that he was the first person I grabbed. But you cannot measure the impact Al has had on the University of Michigan and so many other people and places. My family and I will miss him and his friendship. The world has lost one of its best!”
