Michigan hoops grad Andrew Dakich to play fifth season at Quinnipiac

After earning his degree from the University of Michigan School of Kinesiology, former Wolverines basketball walk-on Andrew Dakich has formally committed to playing his fifth season at Quinnipiac University, and will be eligible to play next season.

Dakich, son of former college basketball coach and current ESPN hoops analyst Dan Dakich, redshirted this past season after earning a scholarship for the winter semester at the University of Michigan. Many should remember the viral video of two police officers walking in on a team meeting, pretending that Dakich was in trouble, but instead rewarded him with a scholarship.

Over his three seasons that he did appear in games for the Wolverines (2013-16), Dakich logged a little over 200 minutes of action in 49 games played, scoring 22 total points on 8/24 shooting, including 3/10 from behind the long line.

Dakich will join a Quinnipiac Bobcats program that finished 10-21 this past season, placing 8th in the Metro-Atlantic Athletic Conference. Next season will be their fifth as a member of the MAAC on the hardwood, where they have compiled a 54-69 record over the previous four seasons. They will also enter the year with a new head coach in 34-year-old Baker Dunleavy, a former assistant at Villanova. He succeeds Tom Moore, who was relieved of his duties back in early March after ten seasons.

Quinnipiac will be entering their 20th season as a Division I men’s hoops program and are still seeking that illustrious first ever tournament berth. They’ve had some other postseason appearances — NIT, CBI, CIT — in recent years, the latest coming in 2014 when they were in the CIT.

The news of Dakich departing the program is the latest transfer news surrounding the Michigan basketball program in the last week and change. Another Michigan grad in Mark Donnal recently committed to play at Clemson next season, while a former Ohio guard Jaaron Simmons has committed to transfer in to Michigan. However, the latter currently has his name in NBA Draft consideration and has until May 24 to remove his name and return to school.
