Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera hit his 450th career home run yesterday. The smash to left field helped secure a win over the Cleveland Indians. To add to the impressiveness of the hit, this was Miggy’s first game back from 10 days off due to a slight groin injury.
Not only was it an important hit for this individual game, but, it was an important home run in the annals of baseball history. With this latest blast, Cabrera moved to 38th on the all-time list (stats from ESPN.com). Cabrera was tied with Jeff Bagwell and Vladimir Guerrero. This puts him just 2 home runs short of the man in 37th place, Carl Yastrzemski.
Want even more statistics? According to ESPN, Cabrera is now the 6th player in baseball history to have a .320+ batting average, 2500+ hits, as well as 450+ home runs. This puts him in the company of Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, Jimmie Foxx, Lou Gehrig, and Stan Musial. How’s that for rarefied air?
