Projecting Michigan’s 2022 NCAA Tournament fate

Selection Sunday is here and by the time the day is over, we will officially know Michigan‘s fate when it comes to the 2022 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.

No matter where you look, the Wolverines are squarely on the bubble and you can bet they are sweating right now wondering if they will squeeze their way into the tournament or if they will have to settle for the NIT.

Here is what some of the experts are saying.

Joe LunardiESPN

Lunardi currently has Michigan as one of his Last Four In. He believes they are currently a No. 12 seed and will play in one of the Play-In games in Dayton.

Jerry Palm – CBS

Palm currently has Michigan as the first team OUT of his projection. Some teams he currently has IN over the Wolverines (No. 34 NET ranking) include Notre Dame (No. 52 NET), BYU (No. 52 NET), and Xavier (No. 40 NET ranking).

Kevin Sweeney – Sports Illustrated

Between him, Lunardi, and Palm, Sweeney is the most-confident of the three as he has Michigan as one of his Last Four Byes, which means they would not be in one of the Play-In games in Dayton.

Don Drysdale – Detroit Sports Nation

Am I a bit worried about Michigan NOT having their name called during Sunday’s NCAA Tournament Selection Show? Of course, I am. But the reason I am worried has nothing to do with the Wolverines’ resume and everything to do with an NCAA Selection Committee that has proven many times that they don’t always get it right.

Let’s take a look at Michigan’s resume heading into Sunday’s games:

Overall Record: 17-14
NET Ranking: 34
Quad 1 Record: 5-10
Strength of Schedule: 5
Nonconference SOS: 32

When you only focus on the Wolverines’ overall record (17-14) it is easy to walk away thinking that they are not a team deserving of being in the Field of 68. But, when you dig a bit deeper and look at their NET ranking and Strength of Schedule, it is pretty obvious that Michigan should get a bid over teams such as Notre Dame (No. 52 NET), BYU (No. 52 NET), and Xavier (No. 40 NET ranking).

Projection: Michigan is one of the Last Four In and they are slotted into one of the Play-In games in Dayton, Ohio.

Nation, do you think Michigan will get into the 2022 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament?
