The Detroit Red Wings may have been understandably frustrated when they didn't land the No. 1 overall NHL Draft pick after their abysmal 2019-20 regular season (prior to the COVID-19 shutdown). Despite owning the League's worst record by a wide margin, they dropped to No. 4 in the selection process.
But so far, that's been a major blessing in disguise. With the No. 4 selection, they took Swedish forward Lucas Raymond. And all he's done since making the team this year out of training camp is lead all NHL rookies in scoring, having currently racked up 50 points in 67 games played. Interestingly enough, one of his main competitors in the rookie scoring race is his teammate and good friend Moritz Seider.
And thanks to his assist last night against the New York Rangers, Raymond became the first Red Wings rookie since Sergei Fedorov to record at least 20 goals and 30 assists:
Lucas Raymond (20-30—50 in 67 GP) became the first @DetroitRedWings rookie since Sergei Fedorov in 1990-91 (31-48—79 in 77 GP) to record both 20 goals and 30 assists in a season.#NHLStats: https://t.co/KpOFzGdzhb pic.twitter.com/P6rFSrp3aZ

Of course, Fedorov became one of the greatest Red Wings forwards in team history. We're certainly hopeful that Raymond can follow in his footsteps.
