Teryl Austin set to interview with the Chargers

Here we go again. Another offseason, another Teryl Austin head coaching interview.

Ever since the Detroit Lions defensive coordinator master-mined the No. 2 defense in the league in 2014, he's been a hot name in head coaching vacancies.

Austin has interviewed with eight NFL teams the past two years, without any success. While Austin seems due to land a head coaching job eventually, there is the ugly truth that teams may be interviewing Austin strictly to satisfy the NFL's Rooney Rule, which states that all teams with a head coaching vacancy must interview at least one minority candidate. A fact that hasn't been lost on Austin.

The defensive coordinator made headines earlier in the season when he told the Detroit Free Press he believed only two of his four head coaching interviews last offseason were legitimate.

Austin hasn't been able to repeat the success of 2014, but has had considerably less talent and more key injuries in the two seasons since.

Many Lions fans seem more sour than they did on Austin in 2014, and probably wouldn't mind seeing him go on to greener, and sunnier pastures.
