Al Avila declares that the Detroit Tigers are no longer rebuilding

It’s been a long, arduous, and at times, very painful process. Could that all be coming to an end?

According to Detroit Tigers GM Al Avila, the team rebuild is over, and they’re now in a completely different position.

“We’re not rebuilding anymore. We’re building,” Avila said earlier today. “We’re in a totally different situation now….If we make a trade — if we make a trade — it’s because we feel it’s going to make us better, not only this year, but next year and the year after. And those (trades) are harder to make, obviously, as you can imagine.”

Of course, with the MLB Trade Deadline fast approaching, many have speculated that the Tigers may want to acquire addition draft picks with their more tradable commodities, including the likes of Jonathan Schoop and Jose Cisnero, both of whom are on expiring deals.

However, according to Avila, there’s no rush to make moves.

“We have no pressure at all to make any trades,” Avila said. “We don’t have the type of high-salary, aging player that we need to trade to rebuild, per se. We’re on the upswing. We’re actually hoping to acquire players at some point where and when it makes sense. So we have no pressure to make any trades or move any salary from a payroll perspective. We’re in good shape.”

Avila also stated that the current trade market is a bit more crowded than he initially realized, hence the understandable hesitation to make moves.

“There are more guys available out there right now than teams really looking at this point,” he said. “We’ll see how that develops between now and the deadline.”
