On July 27, 1999, Barry Sanders shocked the Detroit Lions and their fans when a report surfaced that he was retiring from the NFL.
The timing for Sanders’ retiring was awful as the Lions were counting on having him for the 1999 season and beyond.

So, now that he has had 20 years to think about it, would Barry have handled things differently?
Well, he recently spoke to the Detroit Free Press about exactly that.
“I’m not sure,” Sanders said. “Being an old, wise guy that I am, I’m careful about saying what things I would do different. You can always look back and see things that you could change.
“But all in all, yeah, the retirement part was a little clumsy. But the person that I was, I probably wouldn’t (change anything). That’s really how I was going to handle it, right? So I don’t have that many regrets, as far as that.”
20 years have gone by and it is what it is but selfishly, I wish I could have watched Barry play another 5 years or so.
