DETROIT, Michigan —

Prince Fielder, Miguel Cabrera, and Alex Avila all went deep and Justin Verlander shut down the Minnesota offense for the Detroit Tigers’ 5th straight win on Tuesday night. The Comerica Park crowd of better than 31,000 saw the Tigers jump out to a fast 2-0 lead courtesy of Cabrera’s 4th home run of the season. Avila would make it a 3-1 Tiger advantage with a solo shot in the 2nd, before Prince Fielder smoked a 2 run shot to finalize the scoring, 6-1. Prince finished 2 for 4 with 2 RBI, and Victor Martinez was 3 for 4 with a double. Every one of the Detroit starters recorded at least 1 hit in the game.

Justin Verlander was outstanding, allowing only 5 hits and 1 run while striking out 8 in 7 innings of work. Drew Smyly, Al Albuquerque and Joaquin Benoit pitched great in relief, not allowing a run.

Detroit will look for its 2nd consecutive series sweep on Wednesday afternoon (1:08 pm) when Anibal Sanchez takes the mound coming off his 17 strikeout performance last weekend. Scott Diamond takes the mound for the Twins.

GO TIGERS!
