When news broke last week that the Detroit Lions had placed quarterback Matthew Stafford on the Reserve/COVID-19 list, Lions fans everywhere had flashbacks of the 2019 season when the team went 0-8 after Stafford went down with a back injury.
But thankfully, Stafford’s positive COVID-19 test from last Friday ended being ruled a “false-positive” and he was allowed back in the team facilities on Tuesday.
That being said, can you imagine if Stafford had the same thing happen prior to Week 1 of the regular season? Can you imagine a “false-positive” COVID-19 test forced Stafford to miss a regular-season game? Can you imagine what Kelly Stafford’s response on Instagram would be?
Stafford’s “false-positive” test from last week could end up forcing the NFL/NFLPA’s hand to make some changes to the protocol and according to Albert Breer, that is exactly what seems to be happening.
The good news going forward is the Stafford situation did enough to prompt some action. According to sources, the NFL and NFLPA are discussing adjusted protocols for players who have persistently tested negative, and have a single positive, followed by more negative tests.
Which, as we saw this week, could save a team from losing their starting quarterback.
Former Lions head coach Jim Caldwell says Bob Quinn wanted to fire him immediately
When Bob Quinn was hired by the Detroit Lions in 2016, many wondered if he would retain head coach Jim Caldwell, who had just followed up an 11-5 2014 season with a 7-9 record in 2015. As we know, Caldwell was retained but according to the former head coach, had the initial decision been up to Quinn, he would have been fired immediately. On Thursday night, Caldwell was a guest on former Lions’ safety Glover Quin’s “The DB Room” YouTube show and he shared his thoughts on what happened.
