Detroit Lions restructure Dominic Raiola Contract

The Lions continue to make smart money moves today by restructuring (C) Dominic Raiola’s contract.[1. Tim Twentyman - Detroitlions.com] Raiola was set to receive 4 million base salary in the final year of his 4 year 20 million dollar contract. He would have had a 6 million dollar impact on the Salary cap. While the details are unknown, it is believed that the contract will not be guaranteed. While many fans would have liked to see the outspoken center clean out his locker, Raiola brings a veteran presence in the locker room and meeting room that will be needed in this upcoming “not rebuilding” season.

GM Martin Mayhew has said after the season that the Lions allowed too much interior pressure, which contributed to some of Matthew Stafford’s struggles at quarterback. The main culprits were Peterman and Raiola.

Since the start of the off season, the Lions have lopped 8.5 million off of their salary, with the release of Titus Young, Stephen Peterman and Kyle Vanden Bosch. Raiola is set to earn a reported 940,000, the league minimum for a veteran. Raiola will have to compete against Bill Nagy for the center spot. Nagy was claimed by the Lions in August. Nagy started four games at left guard for the Cowboys as a rookie in 2011 and was competing for time at center last year before an ankle injury and subsequent surgery ended his season and resulted in his eventual release.

The Lions have plenty of problems but Raiola is way down that list. He became the whipping boy when he spoke his mind, and one finger saluted the so called “fans”. When you look objectively at the Lions O-line, there are three other players who are worse than he is.
