Is Matthew Stafford the best quarterback in the NFL? Of course not, but he is one of the best and without a doubt the Detroit Lions best option in terms of a signal-caller for the foreseeable future.
As it currently stands, he is only under contract through the 2017 season, which makes signing him to an extension an absolute must this offseason.
On Wednesday, Lions second-year GM Bob Quinn was at the NFL Scouting Combine and gave an update on how he is handling the Stafford contract situation.
The Detroit Lions have not yet started talks on a new contract for quarterback Matthew Stafford, but general manager Bob Quinn said today that getting a deal done this off-season is “a priority” for the team.
“But it takes two sides to do a deal,” Quinn said. “So I think that’s something we’ll definitely talk about. I’m not making any promises one way or another, but I’ve always said since I’ve gotten here that I think Matthew’s a good quarterback and I’d like to have him here long term.”
Quinn said he has not yet had any talks with Stafford’s representatives about a new deal, which likely would make Stafford the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL.
“I think that’s something that eventually we will get to,” Quinn said. “We’ll see how that goes. We’re kind of taking it one step at a time with the current free-agent class, the current draft class.”
One thing important to keep in mind is that Stafford’s wife Kelly is pregnant with twins and he has made it clear that’s what is No. 1 priority is this offseason.
If and when the two sides do reach a deal, Stafford will likely become the NFL’s next highest paid player.
