Petr Mrazek enters the 2016-17 season as the Detroit Red Wings undisputed number one goaltender. He was rewarded with a two-year bridge deal this off-season with the chance to cash in once the contract is through.

Mrazek’s lightning quick reflexes, athleticism, and puck playing abilities have rendered him one of the NHL’s young stars between the pipes. He represented Team Czech Republic during the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, and even heard his name mentioned in the Vezina Trophy race for the NHL’s top goaltender during the first half of last season. Veteran goaltender Jimmy Howard found himself supplanted by Mrazek as Detroit’s starter.

Unfortunately for the Red Wings and Mrazek, he began to struggle during the second half of last season. After a sub-par game against the Bruins on his birthday in February, he wasn’t able to string together the consistent performances that he’d become known for in his young career. Many thought that he was having a difficult time adjusting to the workload of a full NHL season. That, combined with Howard’s sudden resurgence near the end of last season, saw Mrazek on the bench to start the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs. However, he was soon back in net and put up terrific numbers despite the series loss.

This season, he’ll be looking for more consistency down the stretch of the season. The Red Wings were unable to trade Howard and his contract this off-season, meaning they have a good insurance policy in net should Mrazek begin to falter again. He’ll need to be at the top of his game if the Red Wings are to extend their playoff streak to a 26th consecutive year.

BIGGEST QUESTION: Will Mrazek be able to have a strong second half of the season and lead Detroit to a 26th straight playoff berth?
