The #detroit tigers lost #alex avila to a mild concussion in Friday night’s 6-2 victory over the #boston red sox. Avila was hit twice in the head during the game and after taking a hit from a back swing, was removed from the game.
Backup catcher #bryan holaday was effective in place of Avila, collecting a triple and a run in his only at bat Friday night. Holaday was also 1-3 with an RBI in last night’s victory over the Red Sox. Holaday is now hitting .275 on the season with six RBI.
Avila has had a rough season at the plate, hitting only .217 with 4 home runs and 13 RBI. Avila has started 43 of 47 games this season and despite his troubles at the plate, will remain the every day catcher due to his game calling abilities and defensive superiority over Holaday.
