Babcock’s Stare – Injury Updates on Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Weiss and much more!

This week’s edition of Babcock’s Stare has many important updates on some of the Red Wings top players whether it be injuries or contract status as we push closer to the hockey season. With the prospect tournament starting today and training camp starting next week, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming season.  Here are some topics that you may have missed over the past week as well as a video of one of my favorite Red Wings goals of all time that happened to take place last year.

Ericsson Still Not 100 Percent Heading into Camp

Jonathan Ericsson, who normally plays on the top defensive pairing alongside Nik Kronwall, is still not 100 percent after having surgery done on his finger last year. When he went in for the surgery he realized that the broken finger was much worse than anyone thought. While it won’t keep him out of the line-up (for now), he has had a tough offseason in the training department as it really held him back in the gym.

Daniel Alfredsson Suffers a Setback

Alfie may have to go to camp without a contract as he has suffered a minor setback this week. He has been told to stay off the ice for a bit, which does not bode well for the 41 year–old winger’s future. He is determined to play another year but he wants to be in the lineup contributing on a regular basis. This above all else is what will determine his decision as to whether he will return or retire.

Danny DeKeyser and Red Wings Still Not Close on a Contract

Both Danny DeKeyser and the Red Wings are optimistic that they will be able to work something out before training camp as neither side wants there to be a hold out but it is taking a bit longer then expected. Even though DeKeyser has only played 76 NHL games, he has quickly established himself as one of the team’s best defenseman so they have to find a deal that is fair for both parties.

Datsyuk Feels Healthy and Ready, Helm to Play on his Wing

The pain in Pavel Datsyuk’s knee is 100 percent gone and the muscle around it has been built back up. He is as excited about the upcoming season as ever and cannot wait to get underway. He is also excited about the potential of his new line-mate Darren Helm who will start the season on his wing.

Back Not an Issue Anymore for Zetterberg

After dealing with lingering back injuries for many years, Henrik Zetterberg is very excited about coming into training camp without worrying about his back for the first time in years.

“I feel good. I can do everything on the ice and in the weight room. I had a really good summer, workout-wise, so I look forward to seeing what results that will give me. It’s nice to come in and feel good and not think about (his back) and just go out and play hockey.” –  Henrik Zetterberg

Stephen Weiss Also Feeling Better

Weiss is looking forward to putting last year behind him and now being fully healed he is determined to show the Red Wings that he was worth the 4.9 million dollars a year that he is being paid.

“I’m looking forward to prove that I can still play at a high level and help the team do what they want to do.”  – Stephen Weiss

 Video of the Week

In honor of the Red Wings opener against the Boston Bruins here is a video of Datsyuk doing what he does best. He scored this goal in the opener of the playoffs last year and it is still one of the best goals I have ever seen!

  1. Unfortunately if Alfie retires, it probably just means that Jurco will stay in the lineup versus heading to GR. I don’t see Mantha making the roster till next season. Or if he gets called up because of injury. -NW

  2. I know man just excited, I watched a lot of hoghlight reals! Lol by the way I love it that you guys answer fans!

  3. I agree and disagree. yes mantha is gonna be a huge players I hope. but Alfy would be good to be there for one more year to work with the young stars like Nyquist tatar Sheahan,Jurco. and he got abilityes to help our powerplay. because in the past 2/3 years our powerplay is really bad. since Lidstrom and the best goalie screen of detroit Holmstrom. We need Franzen to be that guy

  4. Weiss has to contribute big time or he will be one of the wings all time signing failures. Datsyuk and Zetterberg are getting older and it make Weiss contribution even more important.
