Darius Slay: ‘I can cover anyone on this planet’

One thing is for sure, Detroit Lions cornerback Darius Slay has supreme confidence in himself heading into the 2015 season and he is not afraid to make it known.

Dave Birkett of the Detroit News reported that following Wednesday’s practice at Novi High School, Slay was fooling around on the field with former Lions receiver Nate Burleson. The two even lined up like they were going to one on one like old times. While coming off the field, a reporter asked Slay if he could still cover Burleson.

“I can cover anybody on this planet,” Slay said. “I am The Earth. Call me The Earth.”

Following a tough rookie campaign in 2013, Slay vowed to get better and that is exactly what he has done. In 2014, he had a very solid season, a season in which culminated with him giving Dez Bryant more than he could handle in the Lions playoff game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Now Slay is trying to improve so he can take the next step in his progression to becoming one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL.

“I think (camp is) going pretty good,” Slay said. “I’m continuing to grow, 1% at a time. I ain’t trying to be out there crazy, but I’m just trying to get better every day.”

Back to the nickname thing–does Slay really want to be known as “The Earth” or will he stick with what he has?

“No, my name’s Big Play Slay,” he said. “That’s my nickname. That’s all day, every day. I’m just, ‘Hey, I’m Big Play.’ That’s all I do, I try to make big plays.”

Like I said earlier, Slay has shown the ultimate confidence in himself so far this offseason, but it will soon be time to see if that confidence translates into making plays on the field.

Making “Big Plays” on the field, to be exact.
