Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia delivered remarks to media members for his season’s end press conference, where he touched on a number of issues.
The team finished with an unspectacular 3-12-1 record after a pedestrian 6-10 mark last season, and once again missed the playoffs. The only silver lining is that they’ll have the third overall draft pick in the 2020 NFL Draft this spring.
However, fans remain disappointed in the season that started with higher expectations for the second year head coach.
“We’re all disappointed,” Patricia said of the overall season. “It’s definitely not how we wanted it to go. I would say that we have high expectations, and that’ll never change. We’ll always keep high expectations.”
“I think this team knows and learned through the course of this year that they can compete with the best that the NFL has to offer every single week. They’ll show up and compete, and the thing we need to improve on and get done is find a way to win….teams that win do it with consistency, and they do it with improving as the season goes on. They have that edge in certain situations where they find a way to win, no matter what.”
“I like what this team is at it’s core, the foundation that we’ve set, but we obviously know we’ve got a lot of work to do going forward.”
Patricia declined to say whether or not any immediate changes would be made to the coaching staff, however.
“Today’s a real important day for me, for the team, to make sure that we know as a team we understand where we are, where we need to go going forward and we’ll go back and evaluate everything just like we always do every year from that standpoint tomorrow and through the course of the week,” Patricia said. “And we’ll see whatever we think is good or not good or changes that we need to make, we’ll evaluate that as we go through the process. Same thing, we’ll always do what’s best for the team.”
