It was looking like Ken Holland and the 23-year-old were close to a deal this morning, and now they’re finally there.
The move leaves Athanasiou with arbitration rights next summer. According to the Detroit Free Press, he’ll need to obtain a work visa before he can join the Wings on the ice. Currently, the young forward is in Switzerland, where he went to maintain playing shape earlier this month.
According to TSN’s Bob McKenzie, Athanasiou could be with the team as early as mid next week.
Last season with the Wings, AA had 43 points with 27 goals in 101 games.
Detroit hosts the Washington Capitals tonight at 7:30 p.m. (ET).
