Mike Pelfrey diagnosed with Grade 1 back strain

After leaving after the fifth inning of his best start of the 2016 season with back stiffness, Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Mike Pelfrey underwent an MRI today. What the MRI revealed was a mild Grade 1 lower back strain for Pelfrey.

As stated, Pelfrey is considered day-to-day, but back injuries can be difficult to heal fast and are easily re-aggravated. Add in Pelfrey’s age, and he could be looking at a DL stint if he is not careful.

Despite more and more indications that the Tigers are going to stand pat ahead of today’s deadline, the news of Pelfrey’s injury may change that.

The Tigers will be getting back Daniel Norris and Jordan Zimmermann from injuries, so the injury is not a huge blow to the team, but having more than enough healthy arms is never a bad thing.
