Nick Fairley undergoes Surgery on Foot

In what seems to be a sick and twisted joke – DT Nick Fairley has had to undergo surgery on his injured foot – injured during a special teams drill on Monday.  He will miss a significant amount of training camp.

Chris McCosky of the Det news is reporting that Fairley had a surgical procedure done on his injured left foot on Wednesday in Charlotte, N.C. He was examined earlier in the day by orthopedic surgeon Dr. Robert Anderson.

He was on the sidelines in a boot Tuesday.

  • Running back Maurice Morris injured his right hand Tuesday and he was in a cast Wednesday.
  • Cornerback Jack Williams (knee)
  • Tight end Richard Dickson (knee)
  • Right tackle Gosder Cherilus (knee),
  • Receiver Titus Young (leg) and left guard Jeff Backus (pectoral), who are on the non-football injury list.

In other news Wednesday:

  • Lions president Tom Lewand confirmed Wednesday that linebacker Zack Follett was released Tuesday night. He said Follett, who was trying to come back from a serious neck injury and was cleared to take part in training camp, was waived healthy.
  • Follett confirmed via Twitter and Facebook video that his intention is to retire from the NFL, not sign with another team.
  • The Lions signed former Michigan defensive lineman Greg Banks.
  • Unrestricted free agents Chris Houston (cornerback) and Bobby Carpenter (linebacker) were back with the team. Both are expected to physically sign contracts (they both agreed to terms) and be ready to practice Thursday.
