Red Wings, Maple Leafs to play alumni game as part of ‘Centennial Classic’ festivities

The Detroit Red Wings are taking part in yet another outdoor hockey game come next year. They will do battle with their ‘Original Six’ foe Toronto Maple Leafs in the NHL Centennial Classic on New Year’s Day, 2017. The game will be played at BMO Field in Toronto, Canada.

NHL Crest LogoIt was announced Thursday that an alumni game will be added to the festivities surrounding the game. The Wings and Leafs played one another in the 2014 NHL Winter Classic at Michigan Stadium, where Toronto reigned supreme in a shootout victory. Two alumni games were played back in 2014 with the Red Wings taking both contests respectively.

On Toronto’s side of things, legendary players like Darryl Sittler, Mats Sundin, Tie Domi, Mike Gartner and Doug Glimour all laced up their skates to participate in the special event. As for the Red Wings, names like Steve Yzerman, Mickey Redmond, Jiri Fischer, Nicklas Lidstrom and Dino Ciccarelli all laced up their skates as well to play in the game. Expect to see many of the same and many others to participate in the 2017 Centennial Classic Alumni Game.

No definitive date has been announced for the game, but with the actual Centennial Classic taking place on a Sunday, the alumni game will more than likely be played the day/night beforehand.

Special uniforms being worn by both the Wings and Leafs, an open public skate and even a New Year’s Eve party are just a few of the cool things that will be going down as part of the festivities that will surround the big hockey game. It’s going to be a fun weekend on the cusp of 2017 for all Detroit and Toronto hockey supporters.
