DETROIT, Michigan–

Anibal Sanchez set a franchise record for most strikeouts in a 9 inning game with 17, and Matt Tuiasosopo had a career high 5 RBIs in Friday nights 10-0 beat down of the best team in baseball, the Atlanta Braves.

Detroit batted around the order in both the 3rd and 4th innings to score a total of 10 runs. That was all they needed, as Detroit took the series opener handily in front of another huge crowd at Comerica Park. In addition to setting the franchise record, Sanchez also set personal bests, and a record for most strikeouts in an Interleague game. Anibal went 8 innings and allowed only 5 hits, while walking 1 and striking out 17. Bruce Rondon came in and pitched a perfect 9th inning in relief.

When the bats woke up in the 3rd and 4th, almost everyone contributed. Prince Fielder was the only Tiger without a hit, however everyone reached base at least once. Matt Tuiasosopo hit his 1st home run as a Tiger in the 4th inning with 2 men on base, to put the game out of reach. Victor Martinez went 3 for 5 with a pair of doubles, and Torii Hunter also went 3 for 5, making this the 13th game out of 21 that he’s had multiple hits. No Tiger has done that since at least 1916.

The Tigers and Braves take the field tomorrow at 1:08 pm. Detroit will join the rest of Major League Baseball in celebrating the Negro Leagues by wearing the jerseys of the Detroit Stars. Rick Porcello goes up against Kris Medlen tomorrow afternoon.

GO TIGERS!!
