The search begins: Is Jeff Blashill the answer?

Let’s face it, it was going to happen eventually. Mike Babcock had to leave eventually, most of us just didnt know when.

We now have to accept that Babs isn’t coming back to our beloved team next season.

Now the search begins and many expect Grand Rapids Griffins head coach Jeff Blashill to be promoted from the AHL to coach the Detroit Red Wings.

Blashill is a great candidate for the job because the Red Wings have a lot of young talent that he has coached in Grand Rapids and won a Calder Cup with. He is currently coaching the Griffins in the Western Conference Finals of the AHL playoffs trying to win a second cup in three years.

That fact would give Blashill the green light to coach the way he wants to with the Red Wings, which hopefully can let developing star players like Gustav NyquistTomas Tatar and Petr Mrazek take a leap forward.

The odds are very high that Blashill will be promoted to the NHL to become the next coach of the Wings. Red Wings GM Ken Holland said his list would only be of about two other candidates.

Those candidates could very well be anyone, but these two stick out as front-runners if Blashill does not work out:

  • Tony Granato – served as assistant coach under Mike Babcock last season. Coached the Colorado Avalanche for three seasons, accumulating a coaching record of 104-94.
  • Dan Blysma – Michigan native and former head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins for six seasons (252-149 record).  Blysma won a cup in 2009, beating the Red Wings. He currently is unemployed in the NHL.

It is unlikely that Blashill will not want to coach the Wings, leaving the coaching search for Holland less stressful. We will likely know more next week.

What are your thoughts on Blashill becoming the next coach Nation?
