Top 5 Quarterbacks
A.J. Reilly: Now let’s talk about the top 5 quarterbacks in the NFL right now. And number one is…
Eric Vincent: One, two, three Patrick Mahomes.
A.J. Reilly: Yeah! It’s hard to say that he’s not the best quarterback.
Eric Vincent: I’m not gonna lie. When you hyped up the Tom Brady thing, I thought you were gonna put him at one. That’s where I really thought you were gonna go. Good, glad we’re on the same page.
A.J. Reilly: Now, come on. You gotta give me, I know this is the first time we’ve done a show together, but you gotta give me a little bit more credit than that.
Eric Vincent: The Baker Mayfield support freaked me out a little bit. I had to sit on the edge for a second. I was a little nervous. It’s cool though.
A.J. Reilly: Baker’s not on my list. He’s not in my top 5. He’s not even in my top 10. He’s not even in my top 15. But Jared Goff is also not in the top for me. Jared Goff is also not in the top 20 for me. So like, I’m not insane. I was just parsing the argument a little bit.
Eric Vincent: That’s fair enough. It’s okay. But no, we definitely agree on the Mahomes. It’s even with Tyreek Hill going out, his numbers weren’t even bad last year without Tyreek.
A.J. Reilly: And so, I hesitated though. I almost football too because going into 2022, the Tyreek Hill situation is a little bit concerning.
Now Mahomes can make plays. And sometimes I think he tries to get a little too flashy, right? He’s not the most elite of foot quarterbacks either. He can scramble a little bit, but he’s not a Josh Allen. He’s not gonna make massive plays with his foot.
But he does have a really good pocket presence and escapability. I’m just curious to see if he can maintain the level that he has dominated with, without the fastest receiver in the league. Who’s able to take the top off the defense and create it’s not just about throwing the ball to Tyreek Hill, right?
It’s about the number of people that have to be committed to Tyreek Hill. So that then Travis Kelce comes open. So that then the other two and three receivers come open and there are holes in that defense because of what Tyreek Hill was able to do.
Eric Vincent: And he loses a big part of what makes him so dangerous. I think they still signed Marquez Valdes-Scantling. Who’s a good, deep threat, but he’s obviously not Tyreek Hill. You bring in Juju Smith-Schuster who I like, but he’s a possession guy. And then Travis Kelce, the same thing, he’s very athletic. He’s big for a tight end, a little fast, but again, these are possession guys.
So having that element taken away could make a difference. But I still like them in that division, even though it’s gonna be tough. I still think you have to give him his respect as a top quarterback in the NFL.
A.J. Reilly: ASC West is going to be tough.
Eric Vincent: Oh my gosh. Throwing Russell in that pot. Oh my goodness.
A.J. Reilly: Just think about it, right? You’ve got Derek Carr led Raiders and then you’ve got Justin Herbert led Chargers. You’ve got Pat Mahomes led cheese and then you’ve got who am I missing? Russell Wilson led Denver. So it’s gonna be crazy.
Eric Vincent: Yep. They got players that ain’t going away for a while.
A.J. Reilly: And you could have a situation where you have the four best records in football and one of them sitting home for the playoffs.
Eric Vincent: Exactly. It’s unbelievable talent. They got that division. It’s gonna be fun to watch for sure.
A.J. Reilly: Because the Chargers made, I think the most moves with Khalil Mack and bringing all those guys in to shore up their defense. And then you got Davante Adams with Derek Carr now. And you’ve got Russ in Denver. Who, I don’t wanna say they were necessarily just a quarterback away but…
Eric Vincent: They definitely have more upside with it, yeah.
A.J. Reilly: Oh my goodness. This is crazy.
Eric Vincent: Definitely sure that Jerry Jeudy and Courtland Sutton would rather have Russell than Drew Lock who just went over to Seattle. So yeah, they should be very happy receivers right now.
A.J. Reilly: For sure.
