Trio of Lions join NFL record books

Heading into Sunday’s matchup with the Chicago Bears, Theo Riddick needed four receptions, and Calvin Johnson needed two, to reach 80 receptions on the season. By reaching that milestone, Johnson and Riddick joined Golden Tate as the third pass-catcher on the Detroit Lions to reach 80 receptions on the season.

Having three players with 80 receptions put the Lions in unique company, joining just four other teams who have ever had three different players with 80 receptions in one season.

Riddick led all NFL running backs in catches this past year with 80. Johnson had 88 receptions on the season, and Tate led the team with 90 of his own.

Barring the team sending away Johnson, Detroit will likely have all three of these players back for the 2016 season. If that’s the case, QB Matthew Stafford is going to have some historically great pass catchers at his aid once again.
