It’s April in The D and you know what that means, sports are in full swing! Baseball, playoff Hockey and… playoff Rugby? Little known to the Metro Detroit area, the Motor City has not one, but two rugby teams in contention for a Championship this year. The Detroit Tradesmen Rugby Football Club, a Midwest staple of rugby since 1978, currently fields two teams in the USA Rugby National League, in Division 2 and Division 4. Both teams are currently in a playoff run that begins with the Midwest elimination stages this upcoming weekend. (4/25/15)
Last fall The Detroit Tradesmen sealed their playoff spots by finishing top of their respective divisions. In their first season as a team, the Division 4 Tradesmen put up an unparalleled 379 points in 8 games, finishing with a 7-1 record. Their only loss, to Battle Creek, was handily made up with a 64-24 victory at the end of the season to clinch the top spot in Division 4. Division 2, not to be outdone by their younger counterparts, put up a staggering 727 points in 10 games, finishing number one overall with a 10-0 record and far outstripping their competition by scoring more than 50 points per game.
As this spring playoff season gets into full swing, both Tradesmen teams stand undefeated in their respective warm-up matches, continuing the momentum from their fall league season. With tough opponents for both teams, D2 playing Cleveland Eastern Suburbs and D4 playing Youngstown Steel Valley, the road to a Midwest, and potentially National, Championship will start with some great contests.
If you’re not content with only watching, both teams accept new players at all times. Practices are at Eliza Howell Park in Detroit, Tuesday and Thursday at 6:30PM.
D4 kicks off at 12:00pm against Youngstown with D2 and Cleveland at 2:00pm at Levey Middle School in Southfield, MI, with socials to follow at Big League Brews in Taylor.
Are you ready for Detroit Ruck City!?
