Whew! What a weekend in College Football. For the 1st time in history, 5 of the Top 10 teams went down on what’s being called “Shake-up Saturday”. It all started on Thursday night when unranked Arizona shocked the #2 Oregon Ducks in Eugene, something Michigan State couldn’t do. But that was just the beginning of the madness. #6 Texas A&M was rocked by Mississippi State in the early game, while #4 Oklahoma was knocked off by TCU, and #3 Alabama was defeated by Ole Miss. To round out the day, #8 UCLA lost at home to Utah. In a week filled with Top 25 matchups, Notre Dame scored a last minute touchdown to defeat Stanford in South Bend, and Michigan State survived a crazy Nebraska comeback to beat the Cornhuskers.
After the dust cleared, we welcome 4 new teams into the Top 10, and 4 new teams into the Top 25. Florida State beat out Auburn by 2 points for the Top spot in the AP Poll, with Mississippi and Mississippi State actually tying for #3. Baylor comes in at #5, with Notre Dame at #6, Alabama at #7, and Michigan State at #8. TCU and Arizona round out the Top 10. Michigan State moved up 2 spots from their #10 ranking in last weeks poll. They remain the highest ranking Big Ten team, but are no longer the highest ranked 1-loss team (Alabama). Ohio State jumped up 5 spots to #15, and Nebraska fell 2 places to #21, rounding out the other Big Ten teams in the poll. MSU’s Playoff hopes took a big hit when Oregon lost to Arizona on Thursday night. For State to have a realistic shot at getting into the 4-team playoff, they’ll need to run the table in the Big Ten, and look good doing it. The next key matchup for the Spartans isn’t until November 8th when the Buckeyes come to East Lansing.
