The hockey season is right around the corner and Red Wing’s news is starting to trickle in as all of the players are heading back to Detroit to participate in some informal skates before the beginning of training camp. This weekly update will provide you with any news you may have missed throughout the week as well as other Red Wing’s content.
Babcock and Wings to Talk Extension
Not only are the Red Wings looking to finalize their roster before their home opener on October 9th, they are also trying to lock up best coach in the NHL before he enters his final year of his contract. They will begin talks of his extension at the beginning of this month and Babcock seems pretty content with his current situation with the Detroit Red Wings.
Alfie’s Return Still Up in the Air
Alfredsson has been back in Detroit for two weeks now and has participated in two Captain skates with his teammates but he is still undecided about his future. While he hasn’t necessarily been feeling any pain from his back that bothered him for a lot of last season, it is the numbness that the nerve is creating in his right leg that concerns him. He has been progressing every day but he wants to make sure he can play to his abilities on the Red Wings this year and that his back won’t be an issue. He plans to keep testing it and will let management know his decision before they head to Training Camp.
Helm to Play on Datsyuk’s Wing
Due to Wings' logjam of centers, Babcock said he plans to use Darren Helm on the wing with Pavel Datsyuk, at least at the start.

Howard Ready to Get Going
Jimmy Howard has played a lot of hockey over the last three years and he used this offseason to rest and recover before he began to put in a lot of work. He is ready to rebound from his mediocre season last year in which he was hampered by knee injuries.
Red Wings Video of the Week
