Alfredsson Skating Next Week, Will Decide on Future With Detroit

Daniel Alfredsson has told a Swedish radio station today that he will hit the ice next week and depending how his back responds, he will then decide whether he is going to play one more year or retire.  He also reiterated that he would only play his last year with the Red Wings.

Alfredsson had 49 points in 68 games tying him with Niklas Kronwall for the most points on the team.  It was also stated several times by Mike Babcock that his presence on the bench and in the locker room was a huge help to all the young guys on the team but Alfie coming back does bring up a couple of concerns.

The first concern is the Red Wing’s cap space. The Wings have 5,291,667 dollars in cap space left but they still need to re-sign Danny DeKeyser. While signing him is inevitable, we also have to figure Dekeyser’s salary will be close to 3.5 – 4 million dollars per year.  This does not leave much space to re-sign Alfie and we would either have to tack on a bonus off of next year’s cap to afford him or he would have to take significant decrease in salary.

The other concern is how it will affect our roster.  As of right now, the Red Wings have 14 forwards signed for next year and only Tomas Jurco can be sent down to Grand Rapids without having to clear waivers.  The signings of Alfredsson and Daniel Cleary would almost certainly guarantee Jurco a trip back to Grand Rapids; a player that has nothing left to prove in the AHL. This would also make the competition for players like Anthony Mantha, Tomas Nosek or Andreas Athanasiou that much more difficult to crack the lineup if they have great training camps.

I would gladly welcome Alfredsson back for one year. I think that what he accomplished last year was pretty remarkable considering that he was playing hurt and very rarely got to play with our full line-up, which I am sure would have given him plenty more opportunities to up his point-total.  I thought he brought a lot of intelligence and patience to our game as well.

So my question to you is: do you want Alfie back for one more year or not? What are your pros and cons?

  1. I would love to have Alfie back with a full, healthy lineup. Given the circumstances last year, injuries and such, his contribution can’t be taken for granted, not just his skill, but his heart and desire. Another real good blog Derek. Keep up the good work!!
