DETROIT, Michigan —

The Detroit Tiger faithful were out in full force, and the guys wearing the Old English D didn’t disappoint. A record-setting Opening Day crowd of 45,051 saw the Tigers belt 3 home runs, 2 by Prince Fielder, to defeat the New York Yankees 8-3.

Through the first three games of the season, Detroit was only able to put up a combined 8 runs. Today, they matched that number. The offense shined as bright as the sun on a gorgeous day Downtown. Austin Jackson, Torii Hunter, Prince Fielder, and Omar Infante all recorded two hits. Fielder was the big story, hitting 2 home runs to right field, including a 3-run shot in the 5th, and a 2-run shot in the 7th which put the game out of reach. Prince almost had 3 home runs, but ex-Tiger Brennan Boesch made a great play in right field to rob the Tigers first baseman of an extra base hit. Alex Avila also picked up his 1st home run with a 6th inning solo shot.

Doug Fister pitched 5 good innings, allowing 3 runs and 6 hits, while striking out 2. Drew Smyly was perfect in his 4 innings of relief, not allowing a hit or run and striking out 5 Yankees.

The home opening series continues tomorrow at 4:05 pm when Max Scherzer takes on David Phelps in a nationally televised game (FOX2Detroit).

Detroit evens up their record at 2-2, while the Yankees fall to 1-3.

What an outstanding day for baseball in Downtown Detroit! GO TIGERS!!
