Izzo, Spartans snag 5-Star guard Josh Langford for 2016

Tom Izzo has to be happy thus far with his 2016 recruiting class. Obviously it’s early and things can always change, but with today’s verbal commitment of five-star recruit Josh Langford, it seems like the Spartans are positioned to make some real noise. Langford, a 6-foot-6 shooting guard, ranks 13th in the nation overall by 247Sports, as well as being rated the second best combo guard in the entire class. ESPN also has him ranked at 13 among the 2016 prospects.

While leading Madison Academy to a state title this past season, Langford averaged 24.7 points, 8.8 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.9 steals per game, all while playing the physically overpowering style of game Izzo’s Spartans are known for. Scott Phillips, recruiting insider for NBC Sports had this to say about Michigan State’s latest commitment;

“Josh Langford is a significant grab for Michigan State and he gives them a potential go-to wing scorer. A plus shooter who also plays with a lot of physicality, Langford should be able to handle the rigors of the Big Ten almost immediately thanks to his advanced physical development. He gives the Spartans a huge perimeter boost in the 2016 class.”

That sounds pretty good. But that’s not all that Coach Izzo has lined up for 2016. Langford will join four-star commitment Nick Ward, a 6-foot-9 power forward from Gahanna, Ohio. Ward averaged 16.8 points, 11.1 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game in the Nike EYBL games and committed to MSU in late April.

So while the Spartans will be losing both Denzel Valentine and Bryn Forbes after this season, it looks like Langford will be able to step right in and hopefully carry that wing position. Add in the possibility of adding Flint’s Miles Bridges (ranked 7 in ESPN’s Top 100) and/or Detroit’s own Cassius Winston (ranked 28 nationally), both of whom are being pursued by Izzo, and Michigan State could end up with top ranked class in the nation before it’s over.
